Kyrie Irving Calls Dončić Trade a ‘Grieving Process’ After Stunning Move to Lakers

Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving admitted he is still in the “grieving process” following the shocking trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers over the weekend.
In a blockbuster deal, the Mavericks traded Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and Los Angeles’ 2029 first-round draft pick.
Irving: ‘I Miss My Brother’
Speaking after the Mavericks’ 118-116 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, Irving expressed his emotions over the trade, calling it a difficult transition.
“You just don’t imagine you’re going to get ready to go to sleep and then you find out news like that,” Irving said after scoring 34 points in 42 minutes. “It’s still a grieving process right now. I miss my hermano.”
He reflected on the bond he shared with Dončić, Kleber, and Morris beyond basketball.
Adjusting to Life Without Dončić
With Dončić gone, Irving now becomes the primary offensive leader for the Mavericks. While acknowledging the shock, he emphasized that change is part of the NBA.
“It’s way above my pay grade,” Irving said. “I’ve just got to adjust and be ready to welcome my new teammates with open arms.”
Irving also recalled his past desire to play with Anthony Davis in 2018 when he was with the Boston Celtics, but that opportunity never materialized.
Dončić’s Reaction: ‘I Thought It Was April 1’
At his Lakers introductory press conference, Dončić admitted he was equally stunned by the trade.
“Everyone was surprised, so you can imagine how surprised I was,” Dončić said. “I was almost asleep. So when I got a call, I had to check (whether) it was April 1. I didn’t really believe it at first.”
The Slovenian star described leaving Dallas as an emotional experience, calling it “home” and admitting the first day after the trade was particularly tough.
Mavericks Face Uncertain Path Forward
With Tuesday’s loss, the Mavericks now hold a 26-25 record, sitting outside the Western Conference playoff spots. As Irving and his new teammates adjust, the franchise will have to quickly regroup and refocus on its playoff aspirations.
